NFA · Class III · Updated Oct 2026

NFA,
simplified

Suppressors, SBRs, SBS and AOWs now carry a $0 tax stamp, and since October 9, 2026 ATF no longer requires Form 4 approval for them. As an SOT Class 3 dealer, we walk you through both ways to buy, and help you pick the right one.

2026 changes

What changed

Two big changes in 2026 made NFA items cheaper and faster to buy. Machine guns did not change.

January 1, 2026

$0 tax stamp

The $200 tax on suppressors, SBRs, SBS and AOWs dropped to $0.

October 9, 2026

No approval required

ATF stopped enforcing Form 4 approval and registration for those same items. They can now transfer on a 4473 and background check.

Still required

What didn't change

Form 4473, NICS check and ID. Form 20 before taking an SBR or SBS across state lines. Full NFA process and $200 tax for machine guns.

Important

Policy, not repeal

The NFA law itself still exists. ATF chose not to enforce these parts, and a court, DOJ or Congress could reverse that.

Your choice

Two ways to buy

For suppressors, SBRs, SBS and AOWs you choose how to take delivery. Decide before you buy: an item taken home unregistered generally can't be registered later.

Option A · On record

Registered (Form 4)

We file an eForm 4 for you at the $0 tax rate, and your item is registered with ATF. Good if you want it on record.

Option B · Same day

Same-day (4473)

Fill out a Form 4473, pass the NICS check and take it home today, with no Form 4, fingerprints or registration.

FAQ

Questions

Which option should I choose?

Either works. Register if you want your item on record with ATF; go same-day to take it home today. Both cost the same, and our SOT staff will walk you through whichever you pick.

Can I register an item later?

Generally no. Once an item is transferred without registration, it can't be registered after the fact unless the government declares an amnesty. Decide before you buy.

I already have a Form 4 pending. What now?

Nothing changes unless you want it to. Your registration will complete as normal. Ask us if you'd prefer to withdraw it.

Do I still need a trust?

No. A trust is optional and mainly useful for registered items you want to share with family members. Our preferred attorney sets one up for $150 flat.

Can I take my SBR or SBS out of state?

Only with an approved Form 20 filed before you travel, even if the item isn't registered. Suppressors don't need a Form 20, but check the laws of every state on your route.

Did anything change for machine guns?

No. Machine guns still require full Form 4 approval and the $200 tax stamp.
