Is a Range Membership Worth It? The Math for Mesa Shooters

If you shoot more than once a month, you're probably overpaying for lane time. At Guns 2 Ammo a lane is $20 an hour for non-members, and memberships start at $29.99 a month with unlimited lane time. Here's the math, so you can see whether a membership makes sense for you.

The break-even point: two hours a month

A Defender membership is $29.99 a month. Two hours of lane time a month costs $40 without one. So if you shoot twice a month or more, the membership pays for itself, before counting any of the other perks.

How often you shoot (1 hour each)Pay per visitDefenderYou save
Once a month$20$29.99–
Twice a month$40$29.99$10
Once a weekabout $87$29.99about $57
Twice a weekabout $173$29.99about $143

Monthly figures based on 4.33 weeks per month. Pay yearly and Defender is $329.99, or about $27.50 a month.

Couples and families save more

Lane fees add up fast when two or four people shoot. Plans that cover more people bring the cost per person down:

  • Patriot, for two: $39.99 a month, or $20 per person. If you both shoot one hour a month, you'd pay $40 per visit; everything after that is free.
  • Guardian, for four: $69.99 a month, or $17.50 per person. One hour each, once a month, is already $80 at walk-in rates.

Each person gets their own member profile, waiver and check-in history.

The perks that add up

  • Guest passes. Defender and Patriot include 1 guest pass every billing cycle; Guardian includes 2. Extra guests shooting with a member are $15.
  • $25 FFL transfers instead of $40. Buy one gun online a year and that's $15 back.
  • 10% off training, from Basic Handgun to Arizona CCW.
  • 10% off Guns 2 Ammo gear.
  • Online lane reservations and a member card for fast check-in.
  • No initiation fee.

Visiting for the winter?

Snowbirds and long-stay visitors don't need a 12-month plan. Short Timer covers 3 months ($39.99 a month or $119.89 paid in full), and Snowbird covers 6 months ($39.99 a month or $220 paid in full). Both include 2 guest passes every billing cycle.

When a membership isn't worth it

If you shoot a few times a year, paying per visit is cheaper. Memberships also come with a commitment: monthly Defender, Patriot and Guardian plans run 12 months (that's the trade-off for no initiation fee). If you're not sure how often you'll come, track your visits for a month or two first.

Bottom line

Shoot twice a month or more, or shoot with a partner or family, and a membership is the cheaper way to practice, plus you get guest passes and discounts on classes and transfers. And the more you practice, the better you shoot.
