Shopping for someone who shoots is easy once you know where to look. Most shooters can always use more of the basics, and almost everyone wants more time on the range. Here are gift ideas for every budget, with tips so you get it right without having to ask.
Gear they'll use every range trip
- Eye and ear protection. Required on every range trip, and electronic earmuffs, which block gunshots but let you hear conversation, are a big upgrade over foam plugs. Shop eye & ear protection.
- A range bag. One bag for the gun, ammo, protection and targets makes every trip easier. Shop range bags & cases.
- Cleaning gear. A good cleaning kit, quality lube and a cleaning mat are always welcome. Shop cleaning & tools.
- Targets. Reactive and paper targets make practice more fun. Shop targets.
- Knives and multi-tools. Useful every day, at the range or anywhere else. Shop knives & multi-tools.
Gifts that need a little detective work
- Holsters have to fit the exact gun model, so find out the make and model first (check the slide, or ask a family member). Shop holsters.
- Magazines are model-specific too. Spare magazines are one of the most-used gifts a shooter can get. Shop magazines.
- Slings for rifles and shotguns. Shop slings.
Experiences: training and range time
For a lot of shooters, the best gift isn't more gear; it's time to get better.
- Arizona CCW Certification ($85). A 4-hour class that covers Arizona carry law and use of force and handles the DPS permit application and fingerprints. A permit lets them carry in 36 other states. See where an Arizona permit is honored.
- Basic Handgun ($95). Two hours of one-on-one coaching in a small group, handgun provided. A great gift for a new shooter.
- A range membership. Unlimited lane time from $29.99 a month, guest passes every billing cycle, and member pricing on classes and transfers. Couples and family plans cover 2 or 4 people. Family visiting for the winter? The 3-month Short Timer and 6-month Snowbird plans are built for that. Compare plans.
Giving a firearm as a gift
You can buy a gun as a genuine gift for someone who can legally own it. A few rules matter:
- You're the buyer. When you buy a gun as a bona fide gift, you fill out the ATF Form 4473 as the actual buyer.
- Never buy for someone else with their money, or for anyone who can't legally own a gun. That's a straw purchase, a federal felony.
- Out-of-state family? A gun going to someone in another state has to go through a licensed dealer in their state. We ship to any FFL nationwide, and they pick it up there. See How an FFL Transfer Works.
- Not sure which gun? A class or membership lets them build skills first, and they'll have a much better idea of what they want.
